Leading OC Companies and Girl Scouts of Orange County Renew Commitment to Grow Number of Girls in STEM Education

STEMsational ME!

Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium Launches Council’s Own STEMsational ME! Badge for 4th & 5th Grade Girls

IRVINE, Calif. (October 3, 2016) – Although Orange County’s STEM workforce is an estimated 21 percent of the total economy and growing, the OC faces a pervasive and increasing shortfall of STEM-educated workers. In fact, 40 percent of OC job vacancies were STEM related in 2014. This is more worrisome given that women make up half the workforce in the US, but only 25 percent of STEM professions.

To address the STEM gender gap, Girl Scouts of Orange County and the Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium, a group of leading OC STEM companies, announced the launch of STEMsational ME!, a Council’s Own badge for Girl Scout Juniors. Designed with the interests of 4th and 5th grade girls in mind, STEMsational ME! offers exciting, hands-on activities for girls to explore science, technology, engineering, and math in the OC and see how they use STEM every day to be themselves – from catching a wave at the beach, to using their imagination to paint and play with fashion, to enjoying a favorite frozen treat at one of Orange County’s many frozen desert shops. The Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium will also be providing customized activities for Girl Scouts to experience STEM throughout the year.

“Girls lose or gain interest in STEM by the 8th grade. STEMsational ME!, along with our Cadette badge, My STEM Life for girls in 6th – 8th grades, helps us ignite girls’ love of STEM before they reach that critical tipping point.” said Nancy Nygren, CEO of Girl Scouts of Orange County. “We are proud to join Orange County’s leading STEM companies in this important work. Developing girls’ STEM skills from a young age will be vitally important to Orange County’s continued prosperity and the success of our community’s future leaders, no matter what career path our young women choose.”

Launched in 2015, the 2016 STEM Consortium Member Companies include:

  • Broadcom Foundation*
  • Capital Group*
  • COX Communications*
  • Ingram Micro*
  • Kaiser Permanente Orange County*
  • PAAMCO*
  • Roland DGA

*Returning second-year members. The Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium was founded in 2015.

STEMsational ME! is the second STEM badge created by Girl Scouts of Orange County and the Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium and builds on the success of My STEM Life launched last year for Girl Scout Cadettes.

Reflecting on the Consortium’s impact this year, Paula Golden, President of the Broadcom Foundation, founding member of the Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium, stated that “Broadcom and the Broadcom Foundation are proud to partner with Girl Scouts and STEM companies across OC to inspire a new generation of STEM leaders.  We are answering the call for more women to pursue STEM careers, where the demand for their intellectual talent, collaborative skills, and innate creativity is high.”

My STEM Life and STEMsational ME! are part of Girl Scouts of Orange County and the Girl Scouts of Orange County STEM Consortium’s comprehensive plan to make STEM accessible to over 21,000 Girl Scouts across Orange County and tap into the unique STEM experiences our community’s STEM leaders have to offer.
